Cre­at­ing healthy rules for my can­teen

STU­DENTS at Rooty Hill High School went head to head in the kitchen on Thurs­day de­liv­er­ing a healthy menu op­tion for their can­teen.

Tak­ing the lead from hit re­al­ity show My

Kitchen Rules, the Year 8 stu­dents bat­tled it out in My Can­teen Rules.

The pro­ject forms part of an al­liance be­tween To­tal Can­teen So­lu­tions and Western Syd­ney Lo­cal Health Dis­trict.

It is one of the ini­tia­tives tri­alled at 14 of the more than 40 schools in Syd­ney with can­teens man­aged by To­tal Can­teen So­lu­tions.

Ini­tia­tives in­clude healthy ex­press lines, in­creas­ing prices of sug­ary drinks while re­duc­ing the price of bot­tled wa­ter, healthy loy­alty cards, peer-led projects, clear mar­ket­ing and stu­dent sur­veys.

In the My Can­teen Rules chal­lenge, stu- dents cre­ated healthy menu items to be voted on. The win­ning dish would fea­ture on the term four menu.

They in­cluded a chicken bur­rito, beef bur­rito, berry yo­ghurt smoothie, gra­nola berry pot and gluten-free cau­li­flower base pizza.
