Why change name?

Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - NEWS -

RE: “INVEST in our rebrand,” ( Mt Druitt-St Marys Standard, August 19).

I read with interest the comments of Isabelle White, Blacktown Liberal councillor (Ward 4, I believe but as we don’t hear or see much of her I cannot be certain).

I have lived in the Blacktown Council area for the past 28 years, and never have I thought of the name in any racial context.

The councillor says that portraying the name Blacktown as anything other than a place of dispossession, segregation etc is rewriting history.

Councillor, is this not exactly what you are attempting to do with this name change?

What of the cost to ratepayers for this referendum? What of the cost to ratepayers (should the referendum be successful) in the rebadging of Blacktown Council? How do you propose to pay for that?

Easy I suppose, just apply for a rate increase. Once again a classic example of political correctness. GERALD YOUNG,

Minchinbury
