INSPIRING NURSERIES

JUST because something is made for a nursery, that doesn’t mean it can’t look good in a grown-up room.

That’s the principle followed by sisters Chloe and Olivia Brookman, founders of the Olli Ella range of modern nursery and home decor.

Chloe says every product in the range, which includes nursing chairs, furniture, bedding, decor and rugs, is designed for a child’s room but looks fabulous in any space.

“The concept is about creating products that are liveable, unfussy, effortless and timeless. It’s about easy care and comfort, while being aspirational and sophisticated,” she says.

Their collection is stocked by Harrods, London. Chloe is based in Paddington in Sydney while Olivia runs the London shop. The pair do everything, from sourcing to designing, drawing inspiration from their three children and own childhoods.

Having spent their formative years in Sydney, the carefree, relaxed Australian lifestyle is reflected in the designs.

Chloe says every product, such as their first nursing chair, has a story. In 2010, after not being able to find a nursing chair for Chloe’s first child’s nursery, the sisters, then owners of an art gallery in London, designed the Mo-Ma and Da-Da Gliders.

“Six months later we were making chairs for other expectant friends and within months Olli Ella was launched, with Harrods our first stockist,” Chloe says.

She says a nursery should grow with the child.

“There are so many ways to allow a nursery to evolve into a child’s room, from choosing pieces that are not too ‘baby’ to furniture that can convert from one thing to another (like a cot to a toddler bed, a changing table to a chest of drawers), add fresh coat of paint and new wall art,” she says.

For small spaces, Chloe suggests baskets.

“I am one of the biggest basket junkies around – on my last count I had 40 baskets at home,” she says.

Room to grow … the Olli Ella range gives nurseries a modern look with products that include Pitter Patter Pink sheet, Si-Ta side table and Teepee geo rug (above left), Mesa wall art, Knitta bean bag, Teepee and Belly baskets and Moondrop rug (top right) and the Mo-Ma Glider nursing chair and Harlequin cot bed set.
