Family takes plunge as community pool opens
THE sun may not have been shining as the Mt Druitt Pool reopened for the swim season but it didn’t stop the McAndrew family from jumping in.
“We are extremely excited and grateful the pool is open,” Sandra McAndrew said. “The kids had a good time jumping on the inflatables and I had a go at the water aerobics.”
Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali was also there early in the day for the opening.
“It was a coldish day, so not ideal, but it was great to see it back open,” Cr Bali said.
He hopes the weather is warm when the community gathers to celebrate the pool’s 40th birthday with a special celebration on December 12.
The milestone almost wasn’t reached after Blacktown Council decided not to reopen the pool for the 2013 season because a report indicated it was not “financially viable”.
The community fought over an 18-month period to have the decision overturned, which saw the pool reopen to fanfare just before Christmas.
On Saturday, the site opened to the public for its first full swim since it was saved. The birthday celebrations will include music performances, a sports clinic, various demonstrations, community stalls and some birthday cake.

Georgia and Ryan McAndrew have fun at the pool’s reopening on Saturday.
