Racewalker’s next big step
FOR most of us walking is just a way to get from A to B but for Kyle Bedford it is a serious competition.
The 15-year-old from Erskine Park is the Australian under-16 race walking champion, and trains up to five times a week.
With a top speed of around 13km per hour, a 5km walk only takes Kyle around 24 minutes.
Kyle said he was hoping to compete in the World Youth Championships in Kenya in 2017.
“I am training to qualify for the world championships at the moment, this is a 10km event and I am used to 5km so it will be a tough test,” he said.
Kyle was introduced to the sport after competing in little athletics when he was just 9.
Having spent the last seven years dedicating himself to race walking, Kyle’s father Darren nominated him for the Junior Sports Star award.
