Medical costs increase
The cost of procedures covered by the Medicare Benefits Schedule has more than doubled to $20 billion a year, despite the population increasing by just 19 per cent. The average benefit paid to a patient has risen from $491 to $843 in a decade. Health Minister Sussan Ley has confirmed the government would launch a “clinician-led” review of all 5700 items of the schedule. Medicare looks set to be targeted as the government attempts to reduce spending.
