Med­i­cal costs in­crease

The cost of pro­ce­dures cov­ered by the Medi­care Ben­e­fits Sched­ule has more than dou­bled to $20 bil­lion a year, de­spite the pop­u­la­tion in­creas­ing by just 19 per cent. The av­er­age ben­e­fit paid to a pa­tient has risen from $491 to $843 in a decade. Health Min­is­ter Sus­san Ley has con­firmed the gov­ern­ment would launch a “clin­i­cian-led” re­view of all 5700 items of the sched­ule. Medi­care looks set to be tar­geted as the gov­ern­ment at­tempts to re­duce spend­ing.
