Nasty brawl breaks out in Oztag match
THE first week of the oztag season got off to a rough start after a brawl broke out during a match.
About 8pm on Tuesday, September 29, a brawl broke out between two teams during a mixed oztag match at the Kingsway playing fields in St Marys.
A spectator, who asked to remain anonymous, saw the incident unfold from the sidelines and told The Standard it turned violent quickly.
“I saw one player drop the ball and start throwing punches – soon both teams were involved and people came in from the sidelines,” the witness said. “There were about 15 people involved – guys and girls were getting thrown to the ground.”
On September 23, The Standard reported a 29year-old was coward-punched during a grand final and suffered serious injuries.
Penrith Oztag Association addressed the latest issue in a statement on Facebook.
The association enforced new guidelines for players, including “throw a punch and you will be suspended, come on from the sideline to be involved in an incident, you will be suspended, teams involved in fights or incidents will be thrown out of the competition”, a statement said.
When contacted about the incident, a Penrith OzTag Association spokeswoman would not provide comment and said it was still conducting its own investigation into the incident.
