ROYAL Randwick hosts its third successive Sydney Saturday meeting this month with four stakes events.

They include the Listed $150,000 Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) for threeyear-olds, the Listed $150,000 Lightning (1100m) for the sprinters, and Group 3 $125,000 The Nivison (1200m) for mares.

The stayers get an opportunity to press for a Melbourne Cup start in the Listed $100,000 City Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m).

Some may feel getting to the Melbourne Cup from the Randwick staying races is a bridge too far but, five years ago, Maluckyday won the Tatt’s Club Cup and two starts later beat all but Americain at Flemington. SUCCESSFUL SPRING THE Cup meeting at Royal Randwick on Saturday signals the unofficial end of another great spring carnival.

More than 20,000 attended Epsom Day on the long weekend and every race was a highlight, from Capitalist’s brilliant debut in the Breeders Plate to Magic Hurricane’s Group 1 Metropolitan triumph in the final race.
