Global City visionary losing hope

Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - SPECIAL REPORT | THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNCILS -

THE man who came up with the idea of transforming the City of Sydney and Parramatta into much larger Global Cities to handle future growth is losing hope his vision will be achieved.

Graham Sansom, the architect of the Global Cities concept set out in his Independent Local Government Review Panel report, says the State Government may be prepared to “settle for less”.

“I am not optimistic for a Global City …,” Professor Sansom said. “IPART has given a tick to something significantly less than a Global City even though it recognised the Randwick/Waverley merger doesn’t go far enough.

“But the indications are, given what IPART has said, that the Government will probably settle for two or three merged councils in that area.”
