Drop off dad’s war medals
WOMAN’S PLEA TO ROBBERS
A DISTRAUGHT daughter is appealing for the thieves who stole her father’s World War II medals to return the priceless family items.
Heartless robbers broke into the home of Lorraine Roberts on Kenny Ave, St Marys, between 3.30pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday, October 28.
Items were stolen during the robbery including cash and jewellery.
However, the only things Mrs Roberts wants back are the four WWII service medals, which were presented to her father William Roberts, which are irreplaceable.
She said she was hoping to pass them on to her grandson one day.
“My father served during World War II and passed away 10 years ago. This is why the medals are so special to me. I wanted to pass them onto my grandson,” Mrs Roberts said.
“These medals mean nothing to anyone else. People forget that a man has gone to war and made a lot of sacrifices to get these (medals).”
Mr Roberts served in the Australian Army between 1943 and 1946 and was presented the medals as a result of his service.
The missing medals are the 1939-45 Star, the Pacific Star, the British war medal and an Australian service medal.
Mrs Roberts encouraged the people involved to return the medals anonymously and no questions would be asked. “Please put the medals in a box and drop them to the local Salvation Army or St Stephens Church in Penrith – or even just drop them on my doorstep,” she said.
“All I want is to get them back.”
As of Tuesday, the medals had not been returned to the Roberts family, however St Marys crime manager Barry Vincent said he hoped the medals would be handed in.
“Service medals are returned to the police at times. In this case we are hoping with police and community effort they will be returned,” Detective Inspector Vincent said.
“I don’t know that the medals have any monetary value.”
Police are urging anyone who witnessed anything suspicious around the area at the time or who has any information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
