Blind man’s charity box taken
BIDWILL MAN ARRESTED AFTER SHOPPING CENTRE INCIDENT
A BLIND man collecting donations for charity has been robbed of $250 in a Mt Druitt shopping centre.
A Bidwill man has been charged with stealing following the incident, which allegedly happened on the weekend. He was refused bail and appeared in Mt Druitt Court yesterday, where magistrate Geoff Hiatt had him sent for a mental health assessment.
Police say, about 9.30am on Sunday, a 67-year-old man – who is blind – was collecting donations for a spinal cord injury charity from shoppers.
He was sitting next to his donation box outside a department store at Westfield Mt Druitt when the incident allegedly occurred.
Police will allege the 34year-old Bidwill man was on a bicycle and approached the man collecting dona- tions before snatching the charity box and riding away.
According to court papers a total of $250 was stolen, the “whole incident is captured on CCTV footage” and the accused was on bail for an unrelated matter at the time of the alleged offence.
Police searched the Bidwill man’s home the next day and allegedly found items identified from the incident, which were seized.
They also allegedly found a black motorcycle, suspected of being stolen.
