Blind man’s char­ity box taken

A BLIND man col­lect­ing do­na­tions for char­ity has been robbed of $250 in a Mt Druitt shop­ping cen­tre.

A Bid­will man has been charged with steal­ing fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent, which al­legedly hap­pened on the week­end. He was re­fused bail and ap­peared in Mt Druitt Court yes­ter­day, where mag­is­trate Ge­off Hi­att had him sent for a men­tal health as­sess­ment.

Po­lice say, about 9.30am on Sun­day, a 67-year-old man – who is blind – was col­lect­ing do­na­tions for a spinal cord in­jury char­ity from shop­pers.

He was sit­ting next to his do­na­tion box out­side a depart­ment store at Westfield Mt Druitt when the in­ci­dent al­legedly occurred.

Po­lice will al­lege the 34year-old Bid­will man was on a bi­cy­cle and ap­proached the man col­lect­ing dona- tions be­fore snatch­ing the char­ity box and rid­ing away.

Ac­cord­ing to court pa­pers a to­tal of $250 was stolen, the “whole in­ci­dent is cap­tured on CCTV footage” and the ac­cused was on bail for an un­re­lated mat­ter at the time of the al­leged of­fence.

Po­lice searched the Bid­will man’s home the next day and al­legedly found items iden­ti­fied from the in­ci­dent, which were seized.

They also al­legedly found a black mo­tor­cy­cle, sus­pected of be­ing stolen.
