MT DRUITT Pool’s 40th birthday party went off with a splash.

Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali happily dived in for a swim, clocking up six laps during the swim-athon.

He said the day was a great success with many people turning up to celebrate.

“It was a great day with a fantastic atmosphere,” Cr Bali said. It is the milestone that almost didn’t happen when Blacktown Council decided not to reopen the pool for the 2013 swim season because a report indicated it was not “financially viable”. The community fought hard for 18 months to have the decision overturned late last year. Cr Bali said while it could have been handled differently, it was time to change our perspective and not dwell on the fact the pool was almost closed by the previous council.

He said the closure without consultation woke the community up and drove the new council he leads to “revisit ways of doing things better”.

The celebrations on Saturday included music, a sports clinic, various demonstrations, community stalls, a Lions Club barbecue and an amazing birthday cake.

Mt Druitt Swimming Centre is on Ayres Grove.
