Power tools: Start simple with a drill or a baby sander and don’t assume you have to buy an expensive piece. Cheap tools work just fine for DIY novices. Ask for help: If you know someone who is handy, ask them to show you how to complete a task. Being shown is more effective than being told. Practise beforehand: Do a test run of the project you are aiming to complete. Drill holes in a bit of wood before moving to brick, for example. Research: Watch TV home shows and surf the web for projects that are suitable for a beginner. Start: Getting started is the hardest part. Once you get going, you’ll never go back.
