Forget Struggle Street. Here’s a reality TV story about a young Mt Druitt couple that will warm your heart.
A WHALAN couple who wanted a no-fuss wedding will now share their special day with the rest of Australia when they star in a new reality television show.
Jared and Renee Downs are featured in Hatch, Match & Dispatch, an ABC series about the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
The couple, who were expecting a baby, were married at the Parramatta registry office in September, and their story was captured by a film crew on the day.
Five months on and the couple are the very proud parents of a beautiful daughter, Isabelle, who arrived in November.
“We got engaged in January and then found out I was pregnant in March,” Mrs Downs, 21, said.
“We got married in September and then she was born in November, so it was quite a big year for us.”
They decided to go for a simple wedding at the registry office, and invited a small number of friends and family to share the day.
“I hate complicated. If you know me at all you know I don’t like fuss or frills or whatever, it was just very easy,” Mr Downs, 22, said.
They enjoyed being involved in the show, and will be seeing it for the first time with everyone else when it screens next Thursday.
“It’s exciting but I’m nervous at the same time,” Mrs Downs said.
The couple got together more than two years ago, after Mr Downs finally convinced his now wife to go on a date with him.

“He kept asking me out and I kept saying no,” she said.
“My friend was saying ‘just give him a chance, he’s a good guy’, and I’m like, why not, I’ll let him take me out to dinner one time, and then here we are married.”
Despite Mr Downs’ aversion to fuss, his proposal proved he does have a romantic side.
“We were up in Queensland at the time ... and you could see the beach because we were on the 15th floor,” Mrs Downs said.
“He ran down there, and wrote ‘will you marry me’ in massive letters in the sand.
“He said ‘look out before it washes away’, so I got up and looked out, and then he got down on one knee. It was very cute.”
The couple are planning to have a few friends over to watch the show when it airs next Thursday.
