LIKE the character in the movie Rain Man, Larry Dela Cruz astonishes his workmates at Penrith’s Busways depot with his superb recall.

Mr Dela Cruz, 20, of Glendenning, who has autism, is an intern in the control room and baffles his new colleagues with his extraordinary power of recall for bus routes, codes and maps.

Busways operations controller Terry Lee said: “It’s only his third day here, if I need to know something I just ask Larry, which makes me look stupid. He knows the routes better than me.”

Disability Services Australia arranged Mr Dela Cruz’s internship through its transition to work program.

Mr Dela Cruz said he enjoyed working at Busways because he transport.

“I’m very happy here,” he said. “This is my dream job.”

Depot manager Rodney Kennedy said Busways first gave Mr Dela Cruz an internship last year at its larger depot in Blacktown.

Mr Kennedy said Mr Dela Cruz would soon be working twice a week.

“He’s taken to the job like a duck to water,” he said.
