MT DRUITT and St Marys commuters are bracing themselves for some hippocket pain as the State Gov- ernment announces its plans to introduce a toll on the M4.

Motorists travelling from Mt Druitt, between Parramatta and Homebush, will be charged $4.21 each way.

This equates to $2189.20 a year for people driving to and from work each day.

Mt Druitt state Labor MP Edmond Atalla is up in arms.

DRIVERS travelling on the M4 will be forced to pay more than $2000 a year to use the road under the State Government’s plan to implement a new toll.

Motorists travelling from Mt Druitt, between Parramatta and Homebush, will be charged $4.21 each way.

This equates to $42 a week and $2189.20 a year for mo- torists travelling to and from work each day.

The 40km M4 Motorway extends from Concord to Lapstone. According to Census data, almost 60 per cent of Blacktown local government area workers travel outside the area for work.

Roads and Maritime Services data states more than 54,000 motorists use the M4 daily, travelling through Roper Rd in Colyton.

This increases to 58,000 motorists at the M7 Interchange at Eastern Creek.

Mt Druitt state Labor MP Edmond Atalla said the toll would hit residents hard. “Workers travelling from Mt Druitt can’t afford an extra $2189 a year in tolls,” Mr Atalla said.

“Families from Mt Druitt have to pay to get where they need to be – whether they’re driving to work or visiting their family on the weekend – and they shouldn’t have to keep paying more.”

Roads Minister Duncan Gay said: “WestConnex will have a distance-based tolling system, similar to the M7, with a cap on the toll paid.

“This is a fairer, more equitable system made possible by electronic tolling.

“It ensures motorists are only paying for the roads they’re using.

Mr Gay said the toll would begin when the M4 widening is completed in 2017.
