OXFORD and Flinders streets in Darlinghurst will come alive with colour and fanfare — not to mention several truckloads of glitter — for the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday. The parade, running from 7pm to 10.30pm, is an event that captivates the nation and reverberates around the world. You can join 10,000 fabulous people as they unite for a glittering explosion of pride in the heart of Sydney’s gay and lesbian district. Born from a night of political protest in 1978, the true Mardi Gras spirit lives on 38 years later, bringing the city to a standstill with hundreds of thousands lining the streets in support of equality, pride and a dazzling spectacle of sparkles and self-expression. While the Mardi Gras festival has always been a celebration of being out and proud, it has also become one of Sydney’s leading arts and culture festivals. Organisers have advised spectators to arrive early to secure good viewing spots.
