JUNIOR SPORTS STAR
AFTER hurling a discus almost 50m through the air, St Clair’s Lucas Rose was crowned national champion at the Australian Little Athletics Championships last month.
The 13-year-old won the state title back in March with a personal best throw of 46.89m, then he increased that mighty effort by 2m in April with a throw of 48.98m to clain the national title.
This week’s Junior Sports Star nominee, Lucas was nominated by his father, Matthew Rose, who said his son was extremely dedicated.
“Both his mother and I are very proud of his achievements; he trains hard and enjoys what he is doing,” Mr Rose said.
Lucas said he started little athletics when he was young and just loved it. “I just started from a young age, when I was for or five ... I loved discus and shot put from the start and happened to be naturally good at it,” he said.
“I love it – I train with the club on Saturdays and I do individual training on Wednesdays and Sundays.”
As well as discus, Lucas also competes in shot put events and placed second at the national championships with a throw of 13.74m. However, Lucas said he would like to focus on the discus.
“I like discus the most, ultimately I want to go to the Olympics with it,” he said.
