MAKAYLA Hickson, of Emerton, is a winner both on and off the netball court: she has a heart of gold and her sporting skills are pretty good as well.
The 10-year-old has been playing netball for Riverland’s Netball Club since she was just five, and she said her dream would be to one day represent her country.
“I signed up to play netball just to play sport and be active,” Makayla said. “I enjoy everything about it – it is just fun to play.
“I am captain of my PSSA netball team right now and we have won every game this year.
“But one day I want to play for the NSW Swifts or maybe Australia.”
Makayla was nominated by her mother, Tina Hickson, for The Standard’s Young Sporting Spirit award.
Mrs Hickson said Makayla’s dedication to her team and to the sport deserved recognition.
“Makayla suffers anxiety, and has that much passion to do the right thing on the court she can become overwhelmed,” Mrs Hickson said.
“She is an over-achiever who strives to take her team far, whether that be her school netball team or her Saturday comp netball.
“She is a dedicated player who can get the ball down to the attacking end of the court no matter what position she is playing – she has big dreams.”
