DO SOMETHING! DAY
Premier throws support behind campaign to promote volunteering in the community on June 15
Wednesday June 15, 2016
PREMIER Mike Baird has thrown his support behind NewsLocal’s DoSomething Day, championing it for bringing communities together and shining the light on the great work thousands of volunteers do.
The inaugural DoSomething Day will be held on Wednesday, June 15 and is a national event to celebrate volunteering in all its forms.
Mr Baird said he hadn’t quite decided how he would spend the day, but said it would likely involve some volunteering of his own.
But, he said, his “main point will be to encourage as many people as I can, and thank the many volunteers that are in my community and across the state – like those at the Manly Community Centre”.
“Volunteering is what brings communities together,” Mr Baird said.
“While the rest of us are going about our daily lives, here at the Manly Community Centre we have volunteers that are helping victims of domestic violence, homelessness, mental illness and those vulnerable in our community.”
The Premier backed DoSomething Day while announcing $2.8 million in funding for community shelters.
While more funding was vital, Mr Baird said the campaign raised awareness about the need for volunteers.
“Why not give an hour or two a week, help your community, help organisations ... give them a go,” he said.
Miss Universe Australia Monika Radulovic also added her support to the DoSomething campaign.
“It’s only a small thing but I like to bake things for my elderly neighbours. I had one in particular where I used to live, her name is Maureen, and I’d visit her and just sit with her and lis- ten to her stories and chat.”
Launched by NewsLocal newspapers, the DoSomething charity and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day urges everybody to do something positive for their community.
It might be supporting a charity, picking up rubbish, helping a neighbour or simply buying someone a coffee.
During the 24-hour period on June 15 post your photos and videos with the hashtags #dosomethingday and #giveyourbest.
