SLEEP IN YOUR CAR TO DRIVE UP MONEY FOR HOMELESS
THE fourth annual Sleep In Your Car night will be held at St Marys to raise money for and awareness of homeless people in western Sydney.
The event, hosted by Fusion Western Sydney and Platform Youth Services, involves people sleeping in their cars at St Marys railway station and the Veness Place carpark on Friday, August 5.
“The event also aims to celebrate the resilience of young people and to convey a message that young people experiencing homelessness are homeless, but not helpless,” a Fusion spokeswoman said. “With good support and accommodation young people can move forward and live their lives productively.”
Kim Horan, of Aussie mortgage brokers in St Marys, was an early supporter of the event and she wants other businesses to get involved and donate.
“It’s hard not to get overwhelmed with the needs out there in the community, but for me actually participating makes me feel part of the solution,” she said.
Last year $5500 was raised and the goal this year is $10,000.
Fusion’s event organiser Judy Tweeddale said: “From the beginning, the local business people of St Marys have really got behind this initiative.”
Fusion is a St Marys organisation dedicated to building resilience in youth. Platform Youth Services is a provider of services for homeless young people.
