UTE MAKES MA MAIN ATTRACTION
CAROLYN East bought her first ute in 2009 and now the 73-year-old, with her little white dog Ruffy and Holden HZ ute The Traveller, is one of the most popular attractions on the ute mustering circuit.
“Ma”, of Mt Druitt, certainly drew the crowds at Sunday’s Ute Muster at Penrith Showground.
“You can’t miss me. I’m the old duck with the walker,” she said with a laugh.
Ma describes her 1980 ute as “her baby”. It turns heads with its dual Eureka flags and has been featured in Tricky
Business and TVS series Classic Restos. It also has been entered in Deniliquin Ute musters and been grand champion at Blacktown Show, Springwood Show, the Stroud country show and the Burrow B&S.
“It gets a bit of a following, but I really don’t know why,” Ma said. “I just go to these shows, park, enter the competition and go meet people,” she said.
“I had all kinds of vehicles growing up as a teenager, and ... I did a little bit of racing at Liverpool Raceway because growing up, all the kids’ hobbies took over.
“My daughter was into the car scene and I used to go to all the car shows with her and she got to making friends with some of the guys with utes and I got intrigued. That triggered it off and I got a ute. That was 2009.”
