What’s fresh

SHOPPERS often overlook pears at the shops but they should give them a go as they are a lovely fruit to eat.

Both packham and corella varieties of pears are reasonably priced at the moment as they are plentiful and coming into season.

Pears on sale in Sydney generally come from growing regions in Victoria and NSW.

I like to buy pears very green and hard and let them ripen at home.

The perfect time to eat a pear is when it is just turning.

The fruit should give a little when you touch it and taste beautiful and sweet.

Another fruit that is easy to enjoy as a snack and is good value is gala apples.

Apples are kept in controlled atmosphere storage so they are available all year round.

Other fresh produce to keep a look out for this week include ruby grapefruit, baby beetroot, cos lettuce and shallots.

PEARS Cost: From $2.90/kg
