REUNION WILL GIVE GLIMPSE INTO SUBURB’S VIBRANT PAST
ST MARYS’ vibrant history will be celebrated at a Back To St Marys Reunion on Sunday.
As the suburb faces a commercial overhaul to ready it for a more sustainable future, the community is invited to come along to the Chambers Building and remember the “good ol’ days” when the district was more like a big country town of friendly faces than a bustling suburb of Sydney.
St Marys & District Historical Society president Carol Volkiene said a highlight of the annual reunion was Paul Mills’ early photos of St Marys school students.
“Paul has a collection of old photos from the high school and primary school,” Mrs Volkiene said.
“They’re in albums and people are welcome to come along and fill in some of the names of faces.”
She said there would be other historical items of interest on display and the reunion was a chance for the newer generations to view a bygone era.
“There used to be a lot of old families of St Marys and this (the annual reunion) was a chance to get together and catch up,’’ Mrs Volkiene said.
“The older generations have disappeared and my generation are now the old ones.”
The reunion will be held from 10am to 3pm in the St Marys Precinct, Mamre Rd, St Marys.
The event also marks the 20th anniversary of the historical society.
