Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - NEWS -

VOLUNTEERS are the backbone of the community, and none more so than the selfless group of men and woman who donate their time to Mt Druitt Hospital.

But age and natural attrition have taken their toll, and the steadfast group is now in need of a few more willing hands to bolster their dwindling numbers.

Volunteer services co-ordinator Yvonne Dickeson said there were two areas at the hospital where volunteers were essential.

“The first is the patient transport area, which is a free community service,” Mrs Dickeson said.

“It’s for people who need to go to specific medical appointments or to the hospital. We have a bus to take patients from home and back again. We need drivers and escorts on the 12-seater bus. The hours are from 6am to about 1.30pm.”

The other volunteer area is the kiosk, which raises funds for hospital equipment.

“We train volunteers so no experience is necessary,” Mrs Dickeson said. ”There’s the cash register and also stocking. The two shifts are from 8am-1pm and 1-6pm.”
