COLLEGE LEAGUE CHAMPS BRING HOME SILVERWARE
CHIFLEY College Mt Druitt Campus’s all-conquering under-16 rugby league team has swept aside all rivals this year in a mighty display of talent and teamwork.
After winning all competitions in their path, the boys are eyeing off next week’s Brad Fittler Cup – their final challenge this year – to bring the final piece of league silverware on offer back to the school.
Coach Mitchell Peachey said although the Chifley team had dominated their peers this year, the boys still displayed a strong sense of sportsmanship and humility.
“They know they are good, but they never rub it in the face of the opposition,” Pearce said. “They are a good bunch of boys ... and humble. They’re typical boys but respectful.”
The players kicked off the season with a win in the Panthers Cup which qualified them for the elite NSW All-Schools tournament.
They defeated Red Bend College, from Forbes, 16-6 in the All-Schools final to arguably lay claim to the best under-16 schoolboy players in NSW. The Chifley boys also swept through the Mark Geyer Cup and followed it up with a recent win in the nine-a-side tournament.
Next week’s Brad Fittler Cup will test them against teams from Campbelltown, Penrith, Canterbury and Parramatta.
Peachey said the Chifley boys loved their rugby league.
“They live it and breathe it,” he said.
“For them to be able to do something they love doing and be so successful — it’s good for them and the whole school.”
