Car honours Vietnam vets
St Marys Outpost commemorated in Parliament
LONDONDERRY state ALP MP Prue Car paid a heartfelt tribute in State Parliament to St Marys Vietnam Veterans’ Outpost late last month.
Ms Car spoke about the veterans’ organisation after attending the commemoration service at St Marys RSL Club for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan on August 18.
She attended the ceremony along with the former Governor of NSW Marie Bashir.
“I am well aware of the strong connection my community has to our servicemen and women – those who have served and those who are currently serving the nation,” Ms Car said.
“It is because we all have a personal story; we all have a connection.
“It is thanks to the work of the St Marys Vietnam Veterans’ Outpost that our community comes together to commemorate the enormous sacrifice made by our men and women during that war.”
Ms Car said she wanted to take the opportunity in Parliament to “acknowledge ... the deep trauma experienced by so many veterans upon their return to our country, followed by so many years of pain”.
“I have been told of the trauma by many veterans at the Outpost, and I know that many members have heard similar stories,” she said.
Ms Car highlighted the invaluable assistance the Outpost provided to Vietnam veterans and former servicemen and woman and their families in the community.
On top of providing this excellent support, St Marys Vietnam Veterans’ Outpost offers many discounted activities and community events such as the fishing club and hosting community lessons.
Ms Car said the Outpost relied on the generosity of the community and the support of the RSL in order to operate.
“Our community is enriched by the recognition and support of the St Marys Vietnam Veterans’ Outpost,” Ms Car said.
“We must always honour these men and women who have served our country.”
Although primarily an association of Vietnam Veterans, the sub-branch also provides assistance to Australian veterans of other conflicts, serving members of Australia’s armed forces and veterans of allied forces.
It is located in The Train, corner of Hall St and Mamre Rd, St Marys.
