Fillies on show in Golden Pendant

Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - SPORT -

THE Golden Pendant, the feature spring race for fillies and mares in Sydney, is deserving of Group 1 status.

The Rosehill 1400m race, worth $400,00, is run this Saturday and will attract some of the best mares in training including First Seal, Tycoon Tara, Heavens Above, Ravi, Denmagic, Serene Majesty, Nancy and Pearls.

Sydney’s spring carnival should have a Group 1 race for the fillies and mares to provide incentive to stay in the harbour city for longer.

When, not if, the Golden Pendant is elevated to Group 1 level, it would ensure five weekends of Group 1 racings in Sydney during spring – starting with the Golden Rose and culminating with the Champion Stakes on the second Saturday in October.

SOLID CHALLENGER

GODOLPHIN’S Golden Rose winner Astern will have his next start in Melbourne but the stable will still have a worthy challenger in the Group 2 $200,000 Stan Fox Stakes (1400m) with the promising Impending on Golden Pendant Day. Astern was too good in the Golden Rose but Impending ran bravely for third and probably should have finished closer.

Divine Prophet got well back in the field and was held up for a run on the turn but his fourth was an eye-catching effort. He also looks good in the Stan Fox Stakes.

HERE’S A TIP

MY TIP for Rosehill Gardens this weekend is to follow Team Hawkes with Divine Prophet and Swear in the feature three-year-old races.
