ELDERLY residents in the Mt Druitt and St Marys area are being targeted by telephone scammers claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office.

One Mt Druitt woman, in her 80s, told The

Standard that a young woman with an Englishtype accent had rang her and advised she owed money to the taxation office.

“She told me I had to pay an excess tax bill and if I didn’t do it immediately a warrant would be issued and I would be arrested,” the woman said.

“I didn’t pay any attention but for someone else that could be very distressing.”

The woman said she’d reported the scam to police.

“There’s not much they can do but I just want people to be aware of these type of phone calls,” she said.

The ACCC has published a “little black book of scams” which highlights a variety of popular scams that target Australians.
