MURU Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre has helped about 750 jobseekers since it was established in 1998.

Colyton mum Jasmine Kennedy got her jump-start to a new career change through the Aboriginal Employment Strategy, which found her a job at Muru’s Community Finance Hub.

Ms Kennedy, from the Barkindji tribe (from barka meaning a river), is the hub’s new administration and loans officer.

“This is a good transition back to work,” Ms Kennedy said.

The 20-year-old is returning back to work three days a week after having her first baby.

Muru currently employs 40 fulltime equivalent staff, and has had more than 150,000 visitors to the centre, in Castlereagh, seeking a cultural awareness experience.

The centre partners with government and non-government clients, to expand meaningful employment and upskilling opportunities for its target community.

Its latest partnership is with the new Sydney Zoo, at Bungarribee Super Park, to bring Aboriginal cultural experiences to visitors.

The zoo will work with Muru to train Aboriginal people for fulltime roles as rangers to deliver Aboriginal cultural tours, bush re- generation and animal care — and has set an employment target of 10 per cent Aboriginal employees.

Muru Mittigar’s culture educator, Tregear’s Kyle Nicholls, 21, is putting his policing dreams on hold to join the program.

“I think it will be great experience to take a new path and to work with animals,” Mr Nicholls said.
