Kids seek helpers on squad

Mt Druitt - St Mary's Standard (East) - - NEWS - Danielle Jarvis

MIDNIGHT Basketball Mt Druitt will kick off its 10th tournament on Friday but will only have a skeleton crew of volunteers.

The program operates at night, and was designed to keep young people off the streets and home by midnight.

It caters for 80 young people and needs at least 20 volunteers to operate safely and successfully.

However, the first game of the tournament will run on a bare-bones crew of just eight, unless more volunteers are found.

Long-time volunteer Lindsay Trevitt said there was a variety of volunteer positions available.

“Our Midnight Basketball tournament is never short of interest from young people but we are often short on volunteers,” Mr Trevitt said.

“As a not-for-profit program, each tournament night relies on volunteers to fill various roles such as helping in the kitchen, team coach or bus supervisor. You don’t need to know the rules of basketball to lend a hand.”

Midnight Basketball Mt Druitt is open to people aged 12-18, who live in postcode 2770. It will run on Friday nights at Emerton Leisure Centre from October 21 to December 9.

If you would like to volunteer, call Vanessa Simmonds on 0434 600 683 or for more information visit midnight basketball.org.au/mtdruitt.
