RICH PAST ON SHOW FOR HERITAGE RUN
PACK your bags and hit the road to enjoy history, heritage and heaps of fun as part of the Highway 31 Heritage Run. The National Trust NSW event offers rare public access to five significant heritage properties along the Old Hume Highway in regional NSW — a route that played a key role in the development of the state. Properties on show will include James Fairfax’s iconic Retford Park estate in Bowral, Old Government House in Parramatta, Harper’s Mansion in Berrima, Riversdale in Goulburn, and Cooma Cottage in Yass. Starting at Old Government House in Parramatta, the Heritage Run travels via Liverpool, Narellan, Bargo and Mittagong to Bowral, where morning tea will be served at Retford Park. Harper’s Mansion, a grand vision that was derailed by a 19thcentury financial downturn, will also open its doors for a guided tour, as will Riversdale, in Goulburn, where participants will be welcomed with lunch and a tour of the property, which once housed inns and schools. The event will conclude in Yass at Banjo Paterson Park, where there will be a vintage car show, followed by a gala dinner and rock ‘n’ roll-themed dance. The next day, breakfast will be served at the Historic Yass Railway Museum, followed by a day of free, family-friendly activities around Cooma Cottage including vintage tractor pulls, antique farm machinery, horse displays, music and food.
Saturday, November 5, and Sunday, November 6. Tickets from $50. Details: nationaltrust.org.au
