Teen dies af­ter fall from roof at re­sort

A TEENAGE male died on Sun­day, June 9, af­ter sus­tain­ing fatal in­juries in a fall from an apart­ment block roof at Hotham ear­lier that day.

The news rocked those stay­ing on moun­tain for open­ing weekend.

Sergeant Martin Tor­pey, based at Hotham po­lice sta­tion, said the 19-year-old, from Man­ga­lore near Sey­mour, was stay­ing in a room at Arl­berg ac­com­mo­da­tion at the re­sort with up to a dozen mates for the weekend.

Po­lice be­lieve he left the room via a win­dow about 5.30am, slipped on the pitched Color­bond roof ad­join­ing the room and fell 25 me­tres.

He suf­fered se­vere head and in­ter­nal in­juries as a re­sult.

Peo­ple stay­ing at the apart­ment block heard a thud out­side their room and even­tu­ally went to in­ves­ti­gate.

Po­lice es­ti­mate the man was ly­ing there for about 20 min­utes be­fore be­ing dis­cov­ered.

An am­bu­lance took the man to Mt Hotham Med­i­cal Cen­tre, where staff worked on him for a num­ber of hours in an at­tempt to sta­bilise his con­di­tion.

At 10.30am he was air­lifted to the Al­fred Hos­pi­tal, but he passed away at 6.50pm Sun­day at the Al­fred.

Po­lice will pre­pare a re­port for the coroner.
