Taking your ski skills to the professional level with a diploma
CANADA has SROAM at Selkirk College.
New Zealand has Otago Polytechnic.
And now Aussies finally have their own International Ski Industry Diploma – nationally recognised and offered by one of Australia’s leading community colleges, Access Skills Training.
The Diploma of Business – ski industry operations provides a broad skill base by offering a multi discipline approach.
Completing this course will see you explore alpine resorts around the world and discover international best practice in ski resort management, lift operations, snowmaking, sustainable development, alpine tourism, resort marketing and media.
These topics are covered in the core units, delivered in Sydney CBD or Melbourne CBD.
Participants can then undertake a one-month, live-in international practicum in either Madarao Kogen Ski Area in Japan, or a domestic practicum in the resorts surrounding Jindabyne.
During your practicum, you will choose your specialisation in areas such as ski or snowboard instructor, technician and rental operations, RSA, summer alpine and mountain biking, or ski patrol among other choices.
There is also the specialised course dealing with disability sports people.
This stream includes training and guide certification specific to disability skiing, snowboarding and recreation, opening up a world of opportunities for you to explore this fascinating and engaging corner of the industry.
You will receive training in adaptive ski and snowboard guiding techniques, and learn to use specialised equipment such as sit-skis and radio helmets used for blind skiers and boarders.
This component is enlightening, and provides a broader skill set and an important community element to the program.
Maybe you’ll sign up to create a platform for a career in the ski industry overseas. Maybe you’ll sign up for the gap year of a lifetime. Or maybe you’ll sign up to find yourself.
Whatever the reason, you can be sure of one thing, it will be truly epic.
