Backcountry snow adventure
“ROUGHING” it will take on a new meaning with the latest adventure at Mt Hotham.
The Alpine Nature Experience will allow people to spend an exclusive night in the snow at a hidden eco-village, learning the fine art of fondue cooking, drinking gluhwein and eating imported cheese.
From opening weekend the program will offer an entirely new experience for families, groups, seminars, schools and individuals who are interested in coming up to the snow for an alternative snow holiday.
The program will be based at Wire Plain and is aimed at encapsulating a sense of remoteness and being immersed in the Australian alpine environment.
The tour takes groups on a snowshoe walk, leaving at sunset from Wire Plain shelter and making way to a ‘hidden ecovillage’, where gluhwein will be offered around an outdoor fire.
The eco-village contains a central tipi with a fire pit, where guests will be able to participate in an exclusive French fondue cooking class, with specially imported cheese from France.
Founder of Alpine Nature Experience Jean-Francois Rupp has teamed up with Hoys Ski Hire who will provide ski deals and snowshoe hire, and food will be provided by Zirky’s with a three-course meal as part of the experience.
Mr Rupp said he wanted people to feel comfortable about coming up to the snow, without having to ski or snowboard.
“I’ve realised that a lot of people don’t go to the snow because they don’t like to ski, and so I wanted people to come up to the snow and discover how good it is without having to do that,” he said.
“It’s all about the people, the atmosphere, being outdoors and that overall experience, and showing people that there is a lot more to the snow in the Aussie Alps than just skiing.
“I like the little things, it’s a hidden village off the beaten track, designed with one rule in mind: simplicity is a luxury.”
