Crick’s team needs speed

PERHAPS it’s foxing, and a cunning ruse to lull the competition into a false sense of confidence.

But John Eastham from Crick’s Auto Group’s Running with the Stars team had one primary question: “Is there a SAG wagon?”

The Crick’s line-up of John, Garry Crick, James Welch and Sam Bohner is one of six teams poised to take part in the inaugural event as part of the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon weekend.

Each team member will run a lap of the 500m course with bragging rights going to the first across the line after completing the 2km route.

“We could be last ... the only way is up,” John said.

“Is there a time limit?” Achilles problems were the reasoning behind John’s lack of confidence, while Garry does little running nowadays due to a knee injury which occurred while trail bike riding more than 15 years ago.

That means the pressure falls on James and new recruit Sam (coming into the team to replace Dean Stuart), who will have some tough opposition.

Among the event favourites are a team from the Sunshine Coast Lightning. The reigning Super Netball champions will be looking to continue their winning ways with the likes of mid-courter Laura Scherian, shooters Stephanie Wood and Cara Koenen.

Ray White will also be putting their best foot forward with the likes of Dan Sowden, Dan Smith, Brent Higgins and James Goldsworthy poised to toe the line. Radio Hot 91.1 will also be in the mix, with Ash Geirke, Lauren Greenway, Kate Morrison and Peter Stevens competing.

Crick’s Auto Group is an active supporter of the running festival, with John a board member, and to encourage entries the company paid for any employees to enter.

“We feel it’s a great thing to encourage,” he said. “Last year we did the same initiative and there are three or four people who did it last year who weren’t regular runners who are now. Sam Bohner is one of them ... it’s pretty cool to get people involved in a great community event and that inspires others to want to continue being fit and healthy.”

Running with the Stars will help kick-start the weekend of running festival activities.

A family fun and registration area will be set-up near the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club, opening on the Friday and Saturday.

All the racing action starts from 6am on Sunday morning with the marathon and half marathon getting things underway.

Primed for the Running with the Stars events are (from left) Dean Stuart, Garry Crick, James Welch and John Eastham.
