Thailand preparation for ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Multisport Mecca - - Ironman World Championship -

SOME stifling training sessions in the humidity of Thailand have helped Mooloolaba’s David Dellow prepare for another assault on the Ironman World Championship.

The reigning Australian champion is among a selection of athletes with links to the Sunshine Coast who are competing in the gruelling Hawaii test on Sunday.

The 38-year-old has made four previous raids on the event, which consists of a 3.8km swim, 180km ride and 42.2km run.

He hopes to improve on his personal best of ninth place from 2012 and, if he’s having a good day, could surprise a few of the sport’s juggernauts.

“My preparation is going well,”

he said. “I travelled to Thailand to prepare for the heat in Kona and I was able to put in some good blocks. I’m questioning what keeps me coming back for more but I will say, Kona is the ultimate challenge.

“It’s an absolutely beautiful island and a beast of a course. So it is the Beauty and the Beast.”

David Dellow is set to compete at the world championship in Hawaii.
