Makeover promotes dairy farming value

Raising the awareness of country students

Myrtleford Times - - News -

DEDERANG Primary School students have busily been ‘Painting Daisy’ as part of a Victorian project to promote children’s awareness of the value of dairyfarming.

The school is one of 14 in the North East and Goulburn regions and 10 in Gippsland which are participating in the ‘dairying discovery’ program.

Children use their creativity to learn about dairy cattle, farming and milk production – and its benefits – and work in pairs to paint or decorate a blank, scaled-down model of a cow.

They actively research a chosen topic about the dairy industry and write a positive news story to demonstrate what they’ve learned.

Some of the subjects on offer include employment, nutrition, scope, farming, products and community value.

The project has been supported by United Dairyfarmers of Victoria and runs throughout the school year’s third term.

John Hutchison, one of the ‘Painting Daisy’ program managers, said that young students in years gone by had either lived on dairy farms and knew people in their family who produced milk from cows.

“Through progressive changes, especially in technology, the number of dairy farms has decreased, yet the size of the farms has increased,” Mr Hutchison said.

“Many students now have little or no knowledge of what happens on these dairy farms, the smorgasbord of careers available in the industry or the impact of local industry on their community.

“The program is a great way to educate rural students about what happens in their community and the importance of an industry that operates right on their doorstep.”

At the end of the program in October, winning schools and student teams will be awarded $200 for ‘best painted cow’, $200 for ‘best good news story’ and $200 for ‘funniest class photo’.

COLOURED COWS: Dederang Primary School students Johnny Gorka and Rowan Jones have been busy ‘Painting Daisy’ – a United Dairyfarmers of Victoria-supported project to build children’s awareness of dairying and agriculture’s value.
