Trout season opening looks promising
IT’S that time of the year again… trout opening.
This Saturday, September 2, is the opening day of the 2017-2018 Victorian trout season and conditions are looking fantastic across the North East.
After a slow start to winter, the rain arrived during July and August to leave us with average conditions for this time of the year.
The streams are in perfect shape - not too flooded and not too low.
As with this time any year conditions can change overnight with a decent deluge of late winter or spring rainfall in the already saturated catchments.
This weekend I think that just about any stream that should have trout in it will be worth fishing.
The always reliable Ovens River upstream of Bright will be well worth fishing on opening morning.
Be careful if wading in the river as there is going to be a fair amount of current pushing through.
The Buffalo River upstream of Lake Buffalo around Abbeyard is always worth a look.
Despite low summer flows, the upper Buffalo River holds some quite nice trout at times.
The Kiewa River close to Mt Beauty may be worth trying, with the area between the bridge at Tawonga and the spillway in Mt Beauty being the most consistent spot for trout in the Kiewa River.
The King River upstream of Lake William Hovell will be worth a try if you have a four wheel drive vehicle to get up there.
The Mitta Mitta River anywhere from Eskdale upstream will also be worth fishing on opening morning.
Bright coloured bladed spinners and small minnows often work well early in the season, so too will a lightly weighted bunch of garden worms.
Also, just a quick reminder that the Murray cod season closes at midnight tomorrow and will re-open on December 1.
During this time it is illegal to target Murray cod, even if your intention is to release them.
OPENING FUN: This weekend it is all about trout fishing in streams as the trout season opens on Saturday. The many rivers and creeks around North East Victoria will be popular with trout anglers keen to wet a line after a three month absence.
