Tennis season begins with players quick to get into their stride
THE 2018/19 season commenced last week with a social morning for the Thursday ladies, junior pennant and “Ready, Set, Play” and the Saturday pennant.
On courts that are in perfect condition everyone enjoyed the great spring weather and although the form might have been a bit rusty and the bodies sore the next day it was great to be hitting a tennis ball.
The Saturday pennant has five teams of four players and back to playing eight game sets again.
The Scorpion team of Don- ald Malsen, Nick Garoni, Sarah Deas and James Whitford is going to be hard to beat after their 6 sets to love thrashing of the Crocs.
All of the Scorpions were in great form and for Crocs Peter Wood and Marnie Broz were closest to winning a set going down in a long tie break set.
In the match Lizards had a four sets to two sets win over the gators.
Jedd Bynon was outstanding for Lizards winning all three sets while for Gators Peter Ternes won out in the battle against. Kevin Mock. Next week has Gators playing Goannas and Lizards play Scorpions. Crocs have the bye and Scorpions are on duty. JUNIORS The Junior competition had a glorious morning to start the season, with over 30 players taking to the courts.
The Smashers started the season with a strong eight sets to four win over the Volleyers.
Top performers were Charlie Benson, who won all three sets, and team mates Sam Rossato and Alex Salmon, who dropped one and two games respectively.
In the other match the Servers were victorious over the Acers, managing a seven sets to five win, with seven games the difference.
Jonah Bonacci and Caitlin Shute from Servers both won their three sets. George Whitford also had a strong start, dropping just one game. READY, SET, GO The Ready, Set, Go! Program started again for the spring season.
This program is designed to prepare juniors who are not quite ready for competition, to learn about scoring, court etiquette, court positioning and tennis rules.
Players are supervised by club members and parents on courts, playing both singles and doubles sets. New players to this program are still welcome, so please contact Peter Ternes if you are interested in this great program.
The McNamara Reserve hard courts are also ready to play on.
