Wickepin win not enough

Narrogin Observer - - Observer Sport - Laura Grubisa

Katanning, Boddington, Narrogin and Williams will be contesting this season’s UGSFL finals, which start on Sunday in Wagin.

Williams and Wickepin were relying on results to fall their way in last week’s matches, and Williams’ 12-goal win solidified their fourth-place position, meaning Wickepin stayed in fifth and narrowly missed the cut for finals.

The league game between Wickepin and Narrogin came down to the wire as the Hawks fought back against a 27-point margin at threequarter-time, and Wickepin walked away two-point winners, 10.14 (74) to 11.6 (72).

The first half was tightly contested as Wickepin went into quarter-time with an 11-point lead, but Narrogin fired back quickly at the beginning of the second quarter.

Scores fluctuated throughout the second term, but it was Wickepin who had a 10-point lead at halftime.

Wickepin unleashed in the third quarter and left Narrogin behind, and it looked like a win was certain for the home team as they went into three-quarter-time with a 27point lead in muddy conditions.

Narrogin rallied and produced a stunning final quarter performance to get the margin back down to just two points, but Wickepin were determined to come away with the win and held on at the final siren.

Wickepin’s Kyle Angwin was stretchered off during the game after injuring his ankle, and Tyron Miller was shouldered off postgame as he surpassed the Wicke- pin league game record. Williams’ win over Boddington was enough to secure a spot in the finals and keep Wickepin in fifth position.

Ralph Kickett was again outstanding in front of goals and kicked four majors for the Hawks. Perrin Quartermaine had three. Narrogin kept Wickepin to a single first-quarter goal in the reserves game, and had a 33-point third quarter to record a 60-point win, 10.12 (72) to 1.6 (12).

The colts had a bye and the Hawks D-grade won by 139 points.

In other league games, Williams blew Boddington away with a 71point win, 19.18 (122) to 7.9 (51), Katanning Wanderers had a comfortable 134-point win over Kukerin/Dumbleyung, 26.17 (173) to 6.3 (39), and Brookton/Pingelly had a 17-point win over Wagin, 16.10 (106) to 13.11 (89).

The first round of semifinals is in Wagin on Sunday with Narrogin Hawks and Williams in the league, Kukerin/Dumbleyung and Williams in the reserves, Wagin and Katanning Wanderers in the colts, and Brookton/Pingelly and Boddington in the D-grade.
