Ally Palanzi runs through her favourite new sites, including an interesting site for an interesting conference
Zeus Jones, a Minneapolis-based agency, designed a suite of websites for the Minneapolis Aquatennial, a civic celebration of the city. The Mess Hall site was created within it to show the logistics of an event featuring food, drink and entertainment from around the city. “Our goal was to create a fun, simple and surprising web experience that would mirror the vibe and creativity the chefs would bring to this foodie festival,” says Elida Holte, designer at Zeus Jones.
The design uses fun illustrations, bold imagery and beautiful typography to capture the feel of the event. Overall the site beams personality, but what makes it stand out are the small interactions and details. The team used CSS cleverly to achieve complex interactions throughout, using transitions with varying delays to create interesting animations. One of the best is the hamburger menu – on hover it actually turns into a hamburger, perfect for this foodie site.
