One area where the web dragged its heels for the long­est time was ty­pog­ra­phy; there was no way to spec­ify a font un­til 1995, and for years after we were stuck with a tiny col­lec­tion of web-safe fonts. It took Typekit to shake things up in 2009, then Google Fonts fol­lowed not long after. Since then, web ty­pog­ra­phy has ad­vanced loads.
