WEL­COME TO NEUE LUX­URY

As an ex­pres­sion of char­ac­ter, be­lief, val­ues and en­vi­ron­ment, the no­tion of iden­tity is as com­plex, slip­pery and amor­phous as lux­ury it­self. In­de­pen­dent and yet in­ter­con­nected, we each strive to dis­cover, chal­lenge or as­sert our iden­tity through mul­ti­lay­ered net­works and unique rit­u­als that en­gage and chal­lenge our­selves and those around us. In do­ing so, we adorn our­selves with gar­ments that pro­voke, hang art on our walls that stim­u­lates while de­vel­op­ing unique codes, signs and ges­tures that speak to the den­sity of our col­lec­tive and in­di­vid­ual ex­pe­ri­ences.

As cul­tural and com­mer­cial agen­das change, so do the val­ues and char­ac­ter­is­tics of iden­tity and what it rep­re­sents to an in­di­vid­ual, a cul­ture and even a civil­i­sa­tion. Like lux­ury, our un­der­stand­ing of iden­tity is im­pacted by the events of our past, the ex­pe­ri­ences of our present and the po­ten­tial of our future. Our Septem­ber is­sue ex­plores the nu­ances and com­plex­i­ties of iden­tity while high­light­ing the mak­ers, arte­facts and ideas that make it pos­si­ble to change our view of the world.

It is in this spirit that we cel­e­brate in­di­vid­ual iden­tity with per­fumer Frédéric Malle (p.6) whilst con­trast­ing his oeu­vre against that of iconic French artist Pierre Soulages (p.4). We ex­plore no­tions of the mul­ti­ple and se­ri­al­ity through Prada Fon­dazione’s Se­rial and Por­ta­ble Classic ex­hi­bi­tions (p.10) while jux­ta­pos­ing the ideas and cre­ative iden­tity of Ni­cola Formichetti (p.14) against that of Monika Biel­skyte (p.16). We re­flect upon the no­tion of cen­sor­ship and the sub­ju­ga­tion of iden­tity with Tony Gar­i­falakis (p.18) and speak to Ar­mand Ha­dida about the im­por­tance of shap­ing a unique iden­tity within a ho­mo­ge­neous fash­ion land­scape (p.20). Last and of course not least, we travel to Am­s­ter­dam to speak with cre­ative icon­o­clast Vik­tor Horsting of Vik­tor&rolf, about the chal­lenges and op­por­tu­ni­ties found at the nexus of art and fash­ion (p.2).

I in­vite you to take the time to dis­cover our sixth is­sue. It marks the start of a sig­nif­i­cant chap­ter for Neue Lux­ury with the re­lease of Neue Fash­ion: a quar­terly sup­ple­ment es­tab­lished in part­ner­ship with Har­rolds Lux­ury Depart­ment Store. I trust that this is­sue lives up to our prom­ise and con­tin­ues to de­liver upon our vi­sion.
