A better start to your day

TV food presenter and Lowan ambassador, Hayden Quinn, tells us how he fuels his busy lifestyle

1 WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FOODS?

That’s the hardest question ever! For me, it changes all the time. Generally speaking though, my favourite food has to be breakfast. I start my day with a bowl of muesli – it’s high in wholegrains, with a variety of fruits, nuts and seeds. It makes breakfast much more interesting. You just have what you want, and most of the time my breakfast is after some exercise so I’m always super hungry.

2 WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO HEALTHY FOODS AND WHY?

Again a tricky one! I prefer eating things like berries or melon and I love having these with my Lowan Muesli and yoghurt. The wholegrain oats in Lowan muesli are highly nutritious and release energy over a number of hours to give a long-lasting feeling of fullness. The nuts and seeds provide the proteins, and the sweet, juicy fruit pieces and flavour makes me enjoy breakfast even more!

3 DO YOU BELIEVE BREAKFAST IS WHERE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE STARTS? HOW DOES THE BODY BENEFIT FROM EATING BREAKFAST?

Breakfast is all about setting your body up for the day, getting the engine going and fuelling it with the best food you can get your hands on. I like to eat shortly after waking, or if I’m exercising in the morning, I’ll eat as soon as I can afterwards. It’s about getting good-quality protein and slow-release lowGI food in at the start of the day to set you up until lunchtime (or at least until your first snack – if you’re anything like me!).

4 WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY ON A PLATE LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

To be honest, I don’t think there is such a thing as a typical day in my world! But, if I was just doing a regular ‘office day’, it would go something like this: scrambled eggs with pesto and zucchini, rooibos tea, followed by a delicious bowl of Lowan Swiss Muesli with natural yoghurt for breakfast. Then, for a mid-morning snack, I like tuna on toast with cucumber and cheese. For lunch I generally have a pre-made salad which I mix up with different ingredients like chicken, nuts, wild rice, avo and sauerkraut. After lunch, I usually don’t eat until after I’ve been to the gym. Dinner is generally a simple, balanced meal with protein and a much larger serving of vegies. I do like dessert! I’ll usually have something sweet, like chocolate or ice-cream, with a cup of tea to unwind before bed.
