Delta and Olivia’s close bond
INSIDE THE SPECIAL BOND THAT’S HELPING THE GREASE STAR THROUGH HER LATEST CANCER CRISIS
They’ve been close friends for years, having both fought and survived cancer. But now, Olivia Newton-john has opened up about how Delta Goodrem has helped the 68-year-old Grease star during her recent brave health battle. Revealing how Olivia is committed to being a role model for all women going through cancer, sources say she’s particularly committed to being a source of inspiration to Delta, who she shares a ‘mother-daughter’ connection with. ‘Delta is playing Olivia in the upcoming Channel Seven mini-series and really looks up to her,’ says a source. ‘Olivia knows that and has told friends she loves being a role model to Delta. They’ve always had a strong mother-daughterstyle relationship and are very close. ‘Olivia is determined to beat cancer for herself and her family – but also for women like Delta, who look up to her so much. It’s really helping her mental battle.’
Reunited at last week’s Olivia Newton-john Cancer Wellness & Research Centre Gala at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Olivia and Delta hugged tightly and were constant companions throughout the evening.
Afterwards, Delta – who battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma at age 18 – took to social media to toast her ‘inspiration’, revealing: ‘Beautiful to see my friend continue to make such a difference in people’s lives... #myinspiration love you.’
Delta, 32, has made no secret of her deep affection for Olivia. After the singing and acting icon revealed that her breast cancer – which she first battled in 1992 – had returned in May, Delta posted a heartwarming message about their close bond.
‘Sending my deepest love and support to my hero, friend and mentor Olivia as she starts treatment,’ Delta wrote. ‘If there is one person that embodies hope and healing it’s Olivia. She is one of the world’s kindest and most giving humans and I send you all my love & well wishes. Love you so much.’
Olivia, meanwhile, has described Delta as ‘wonderful’ – a sentiment that brings joy to her young protege.
‘Olivia’s been an incredible guiding light with me,’ Delta once revealed. ‘She’s always given me really great advice... She’s beautiful and we have a beautiful friendship.’
Having had cancer at just 18, Delta is now doing all she can to support pal Olivia.
The pair have shared a close friendship since Delta’s early days (left), and they continue to give each other strength.
