Expert hair and make-up hacks to simplify your day

New Idea - - New Fashion -

Most of us are multi-tasking maestros, but mornings can be hectic. To get you moving faster, make-up expert Napoleon Perdis and founder of Que Colour hair salon Monique Mcmahon share their simple hacks to take time off your daily beauty routine...

WAKE UP THOSE TIRED EYES

Soothe, cool and de-puff eyes with a DIY eye mask. ‘Simply place your primer in the fridge overnight, then apply a small-sized amount under the eye area. Leave on, so skin is refreshed,’ says Napoleon. For best results, let the skin absorb the primer without rinsing. Natio Ageless Illuminating Primer, $16.95.

CLEAN HAIR FAST

‘There’s a new wave of shampoos emerging that don’t need to be followed by a conditioner,’ says Monique. These shampoos cleanse hair using natural ingredients like rassoul clay, which removes oil from the scalp, and aloe vera, which adds moisture and volume. ‘One of the other benefits is that you won’t need to wash your hair as often, so they’re all-round time-savers,’ says Monique. A two-inone formula is also great for those mornings where time is of the essence, but your scalp needs extra TLC. Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp Care 2-in-1 350ml, $12.49. Christophe Robin Cleansing Bar with Aloe Vera, $27.

SKIN SOS

Use a dry body brush to exfoliate skin in the mornings before showering, then follow with a multi-tasking oil to combat dry skin and fight stretch marks at the same time. Apply to slightly damp skin for ultimate absorption. Nivea 4-in-1 Firming Body Oil, $14.95.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME

Monique recommends using a finishing lotion, post-wash, to close and protect the cuticles of the hair shaft. ‘You can revive your look throughout the day – use the spray to subtly scent your skin, and as a wet version of a dry shampoo the following morning to refresh hair. As busy women, we need our products to work as hard as we do,’ says Monique. Theorie Argan Oil Infused Extra Hold Finishing Hairspray, $19.95.

GET AN INSTANT GLOW

‘Create an instant luminous base in seconds by mixing a small bit of loose goldenshimmery eyeshadow into your foundation,’ says Napoleon. For dewy, supermodel skin, apply with a foundation brush. Napoleon Perdis Loose Eye Dust, $35.

REMOVE MAKE-UP SUPER-FAST

Run out of make-up remover? Try using your primer with cotton pads. ‘Start by applying a small amount of primer to damp cotton pads, then apply to the skin in circular motions and rinse thoroughly,’ says Napoleon. This will leave skin hydrated and the primer also helps calm redness from the skin.

SEXY EYES IN RECORD TIME

Just realised you’ve run out of eyeliner? Never fear... If you’ve got mascara, you have a solution. ‘Mascara has a formula that works great as an eyeliner and has incredible durability,’ says Napoleon. Simply swipe the mascara wand on your hand to get some product, take a small angled brush and carefully apply. Napoleon Perdis Long Black Mascara, $39. Nude By Nature Angled Eyeliner Brush, $16.95.

COVER GREYS ON-THE-GO

Try a colour stick or powder and apply to the roots. If you don’t have product on hand, try to mix up your part or add some extra volume to your hair with a dry shampoo. Creating extra volume will take the emphasis off your roots. Cover Your Gray Cleanse and Cover Dry Shampoo Brunette, $29.95. De Lorenzo Essential Treatments Absorb Dry Shampoo, $19.90.

TAME HAIR ON THE FLY

‘You can use it to smooth fly-away hairs from the face, add gloss to a high ponytail, and condition lips, hands and skin,’ says Monique. Antipodes Saviour Skin Balm, $19.90.
