THE SUITCASE KILLER

New Idea - - Official Magazine -

The battered body of murdered Chicago academic Sheila von Wiese-mack was found stuffed inside a bloody suitcase at a luxury five-star Bali resort in August 2014. The last time the 62-year-old millionaire heiress was seen alive, she was arguing with 19-year-old daughter Heather Mack in the hotel foyer. Sheila had flown pregnant Heather to the island paradise in a bid to heal their tempestuous relationship. But when Heather’s boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, 21, turned up unexpectedly – and Sheila discovered her credit card had been used to pay for his $12,000 flight – she was furious.

Mack and Schaefer initially claimed Sheila was killed by robbers. Then they tried to argue it was self-defence.

But their lies quickly unravelled when text messages revealed the pair had discussed the best way of killing Sheila – who was often violently assaulted by Mack at their US home, with police having been called a staggering 86 times.

Mack’s daughter Stella is now being cared for by an Australian woman in Bali, as her mother serves 10 years in Kerobokan Prison and her father, now Mack’s ex-partner, completes his 18-year sentence.

WITH THEIR WHOLE LIVES AHEAD OF THEM, IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE HOW THESE KIDS BECAME MONSTERS
