Teens who terrorise
Moments before Aussie teenager Brittney Jade Dwyer savagely stabbed her 81-year-old grandfather to death, they had been reminiscing over the family album as he showed her treasured photographs and videos from her childhood.
But when Robert Whitwell walked the then 19-year-old Dwyer to the front door, she turned on him, stabbing him in the neck and chest.
As her elderly grandfather bled to death, Dwyer – who intended to rob him of his life savings – did the washing up.
She absconded with just $1000 in cash, as well as a couple of cameras.
The teenager, who claims to have been motivated by TV crime series American Horror Story, had driven to Robert’s Adelaide home from Brisbane with her accomplice Bernadette Burns, now 22, in August 2016.
Before she was arrested, Dwyer played the grieving
‘[We] comforted you as you wept your false tears and made comments of “my poor poppa,”’ Robert’s brother Geoffrey said in his victim impact statement.
‘I now know that I was embracing and comforting my brother’s killer.’
Dwyer’s mother Tonya said: ‘The images of what my father went through in his last minutes of life consumes me with sadness.’
Dwyer was sentenced to life in prison with a non-parole period of 21 years, and Burns was jailed for life with a nonparole period of 13.5 years.
Dwyer’s ex-girlfriend Shelby Holmes, 19, was handed a suspended sentence for an earlier attempt to rob Mr Whitwell.
