EE very morning at 5am, Perth motherof-two Samantha Jackson wakes to a series of text messages from superstar Mel Gibson in the US. In an unusual twist of fate, the health coach met the Braveheart actor in a Sydney restaurant in June, and now Sam dispenses daily advice to keep him fit and trim. “We swap about 30 texts a day and Facetime a couple of times a week,” explains the former corporate executive. The 64-year-old actor credits Sam – who he calls by her nickname Mighty Mouse – with helping him lose an impressive 14kg. “Mighty Mouse, I don’t have time to work out today. That OK?” Mel’s text message might read.

To which Sam’s reply is something like: “Not OK. Get on the treadmill!”

And her methods work: in just eight weeks, the Oscar winner has been transformed into a much sleeker, healthier version of himself.

“He’s thrilled the weight is off. He’s lost 27cm around his belly,” says Sam, 45, who’s banned cream from Mel’s morning coffee and got him to bin the butter he used to fry his steaks in.

The way Sam met Mel just four months ago reads like a film script. Mel was sitting at the table next to Sam, her husband Martin and some friends. Sam’s friend went over to say hi and brought Mel back to their table. Soon the star was happily chatting as they tucked into pizza and salad.

“He was very easygoing and entertaining. We sat there for hours, talking until about 2am.

“Then in the early hours, Mel tapped his gut and said, ‘I just can’t get rid of this middle-aged spread. I’ve tried everything and it simply can’t be done,’” Guildford-based Sam recalls.

“I replied, ‘No, it can be done. Give me eight weeks and I’ll get rid of that gut!’”

The star snorted, “What are you, a nutritionist or something?”

“Yeah, I am,” Sam fired back. “I can teach you how to eat properly.”

“I know how to eat properly,” Mel responded.

“Bull---t,” was Sam’s earthy response. “If you did, would we be having this conversation now?” That silenced the acting heavyweight, who then gave Sam his phone number and took her details.

“I was blunt because I thought, ‘I’ve got nothing to lose, I’m probably never going to see this person again’ and I certainly wasn’t intimidated,” Sam reflects. “I thought, ‘You’re just another bloke, you’ve proved it by sitting with us, laughing and telling some funny stories.’”

Three days later, a text pinged through: “Hey Mighty Mouse, what are you going to do about my gut?” Mel had written.

“We spoke for two hours, and I took notes of all his dietary habits. I asked him, ‘What made you reach out?’ And he said, ‘you made sense, you called me out, and on the plane home to LA, all I could hear was your voice in my head saying you can do it!’” she says, laughing.

“I told him, ‘I have no interest in who you are and what you do for a living, my focus is getting you healthy. You need to trust me and if you stuff up, tell me!’”

The father of nine, who lives with partner Rosalind Ross, 28, and their baby son Lars, does all his own cooking. Soon Sam had devised a dietary plan for her client, explaining, “Mel wasn’t eating bad food, just too much of it.” She also tweaked his exercise regimen to mostly swimming, walking, and cycling. Within weeks Mel had shed the weight and admitted he’d not felt this healthy in years. He’s so happy, in fact, he’s publicly singing Sam’s praises in a joint video that’s been posted on social media. With her business already getting busier, she’s now considering a move to the US.

“I’ve never been intimidated that he’s a star, I’ve always thought, you’re just a dude who needs some help,” explains Sam, adding, “I’m now his health coach for life. My job is to keep him feeling his best so he’s able to keep feeling great every day. I’m just so thankful we bumped into each other that night.”

Mel, here in The Bounty in 1984, has seen his body expand with his bad diet choices. The Oscar- winning actor has lost 14kg and is much fitter after just a few short months following Sam’s instructions via text message.
